The Master Cleanse

A Detoxification Program

The Master Cleanse, also known as “The Lemonade Diet” or “The Maple Syrup Diet” is a 10-40 day fasting program. It was created by Stanley Burroughs in 1941. He touted his program as a detoxification of the body, eliminating harmful toxins, which in turn causes the body to lose weight. He also regarded the fast as a cure-all for disease.
The beauty of the Master Cleanse is that many people (myself included) experience:

· Little or no hunger

· Clarity of thought

· Elimination of cravings (food, nicotine, caffeine, alcohol, drugs, etc.)

· Clear skin

· Vitality and plenty of energy

If you are thinking of trying the Master Cleanse, it is important that you follow it to-the-letter. If you omit steps or ingredients or alter the program in any way, it will not be so effective and could even have unpleasant consequences. For example, I have heard of people “cheating” by having a little bit of solid food only to have all the cravings return. Also, there are those who tried doing a salt water flush after eating, which made them vomit or feel nauseous. These things will not happen if you follow it exactly and pay close attention to measurements.
While on the cleanse, I found it very helpful to refer to Peter Glickman’s book, “Lose Weight, Have More Energy & Be Happier in 10 Days” which was published in 2005 and again in 2006. In his book, Peter tells you exactly what to expect at every turn. You will know which days tend to be more difficult than others and you will read about the pitfalls to avoid as well as how to come off the diet (which is also very important.)
So without further ado, here is the diet in a nutshell.
Shopping List for 10 Days:

· 40 organic lemons or 80 organic limes (only buy ˝ at a time)

· 3 quarts organic Grade B maple syrup

· 2-1/2 oz. cayenne pepper

· 10 gallons spring water

· 1 box laxative tea (senna blend)

· ˝ lb. non-iodized sea salt (light grey Celtic Sea Salt is recommended)

Begin your diet/fast the night before by drinking a cup of herbal laxative tea (must contain senna).
When you awaken in the morning, before you eat or drink anything else, mix and drink the following:

Dissolve 2 teaspoons sea salt in 2 quarts of water. Drink the whole thing!

Warning! Allow up to 3 hours to be close to a bathroom. The urge “to go” will be quite strong.
After you have consumed the salt water, you may begin to drink the lemonade at any time. Some have found that drinking lemonade immediately after the salt water speeds up the elimination process.
Lemonade Recipe:
2 Tablespoons fresh squeezed organic lemon juice
2 Tablespoons organic Grade B maple syrup
1/10th teaspoon cayenne pepper
8 oz. spring water
Drink 6-12 (eight-oz.) glasses of lemonade per day plus unlimited spring water. Also, occasional herbal mint tea. Nothing else is allowed and no alterations are allowed. Try to make the lemonade fresh. Don't make quantities larger than one day's supply. Making it fresh by the glass is best.
Each night of the program, you must drink a cup of laxative tea and each morning do the 2 quart salt water flush and then drink 6-12 glasses of lemonade plus unlimited spring water throughout the day.
Again, get the book – there is a lot more to it than what I have told you about here. The book will inform and encourage you, and could mean the difference between success and failure. You will feel so much better!

Note: If you are diabetic, you should also purchase Stanley Burroughs “The Master Cleanser” (published in 1976) as there are special instructions for diabetics.
